The Salem News: Peabody police could be first in state to get 9/11 holiday pay

  • sigh! · 1 year ago
So I am totally for police getting paid more!, any day of the week I would rather the men and women who protect us everyday to be overpaid then underpaid........but 9/11 pay???.....really???....Since Peabody (thankfully) had probably nothing to do with the tragedy of that day, giving them Holiday pay for it is just asking for trouble.....
If you needed a holiday thrown in there I am all for "Guy Fawkes day" at least he didn't succeed in blowing up any buildings.
  • Bobby V · 1 year ago
As a person who was living and working in NY on 9/11 and lost a few friends, I find this highly offensive. I can't belive these union freaks took advantage of the biggest tragedy of our lifetime to make a few extra bucks.

This is why we must all vote yes on q1 and hope to break these unions. Just sickening. Please tell me what some local yokel mass police dept had to do with 9/11.
  • Fridays Child · 1 year ago
I am the mother of a retired police officer (heart related) and I am appolled at the non existant holiday pay. I lived though the bombing of Pearl Harbor and personally know someone that is still at the bottom of the harbor but never received "Holiday Pay" when I was working. If I were a Peabody Police Officer i would be ashamed to show my face to the public that is suffering so badly in this economy and will have to pay this "holiday pay" through higher taxes.
  • townie · 1 year ago
the salem news is right. the union left alot of tragedy money on the table, like Pearl Harbor holiday pay, uss cole holiday pay, gulf of tonkin holiday pay, bunky dent holiday pay, there must be more. someone must have tried to see if it would fly and found out no one will question ANYTHING about 9/11 because it would appear unpatriotic..

It's sad how these cops and firefighters in the country feels the need to piggy back the tragedy of 9/11 to gain money and attention. There are already funds for if they are killed in line of duty, they have labor day, and not to mention if a cop/firefighter had nothing to do with 9/11 why do they get holiday pay? Did they rush into those buildings? Were they some of the first responders that are dying now because of their bravery? Maybe some helped after the face but they weren't in immediate danger. I'm sure being a cop/firefighter has it's danger, I know I couldn't do it but this is the career they chose. They chose it knowing full well the dangers, their families know full well the dangers and they are paid well for it, they have great pensions and all kinds of other perks but they don't need this sh*t...it's just an excuse. A lot of people get up everyday in this country and go to less dangerous jobs like working at a coffee shop or bike shop but that doesn't stop a crazed customer coming in and shooting up the place...as we've all seen on the news...it does not matter exactly what you do for work you can still be killed at work, one way or another but is there a special fund for "Hank the care sales man" that just got shot and now his family have nothing? No...and the poor guys insurance company would bust the wife's balls about any money they could have...but that would never happen to a cop/firefighters family. They get enough, they know what they do, they enjoy it and they are more than fairly compensated.

    Right on!!!!!!!
  • feedback · 1 year ago
then why do so many people get compensated for memorial day look how many people in this country get the day off paid for memorial day a day to remember men and women who died protecting this country. People love to dump on the police and make them all out to be these over paid lazy do nothings. Im sure in your job you get perks to an memorial day might even be one of them so think before you speak
  • ritchie · 1 year ago
    Simply pathetic.
  • America; can't afford Obama · 1 year ago
I get a kick out how they play up what a dangerous job they have, the wives never know if they'll come home again so on. It looks to me like being a cop is a pretty safe job.

Cop Line of duty death 2007-----------148
    Construction workers 2006------------1226
    Miners 2006 --------------------------------836
    Manufacturing jobs------------------------447
We already have a holiday for them, and every other worker, its called labor day ,no need for them to make up a new one, not to mention what a bad president this sets.

If they are getting holiday pay shouldn't it be for a holiday? Last time I checked 9/11 was just a day...a tragic day but still a day...not a holiday. Maybe it should be...no school, no work for non essentials and they can have their "holiday pay" but how can they get holiday pay for something that isn't a holiday?
  • wrong · 1 year ago
What is the world coming to. Peabody Police had nothing to do with 9-11. Maybe after the fact some went to help. But come on you didn't lose your best friend, partner, boss, relative. You were 300+ miles away watching it on TV. This is a total disgrace that cops again are acting above the law making holiday's that aren't holiday's. Its no wonder people bash cops especially when they pull this and guess what we the taxpayers find out what the cops are up to after the fact. Just like Peabody Cops helped on 9-11 after the fact. Sad day for taxpayers as were getting raped by the people who claim to work in the best interest of public safety.
  • Bernadette · 1 year ago
Making 9/11 a paid holliday for policemen? Why? To honor thier brothers who on 9/11 did their job to the best of their ability and upheld their oath as an officer? A better way to honor them would be to volunteer on that day to REALLY show how much they care. I wonder how many officers would be working then?
    Hey,here's an idea...
Why don't we also grant double pay to every judge in the country for the day O.J. Simpson was actually found guilty of something? Now that's a Holiday!

Congrats to PPD. You guys deserve a contract and work hard. It's funny how jealous people get when you try to work hard and get ahead in life. My guess is that they all will vote for Obama so they can get ahead by leeching off you when you pay your high taxes to support them. Well done boys in blue!
  • sickofurcrap · 1 year ago

  • crazyasacoolfox · 1 year ago

  • Dave · 1 year ago
Smitty...your funny...you a cop, or sleeping with one or something because every single news story about a cop has you sticking up for them...don't you think that if the majority all agree that most cops are dirty, corrupt, PIGS that just use their position to bully others and rape the syetem rather than do their job...and when they do their job (like the rest of us do daily) they expect rewards for it. When's the last time your boss decided a day was a holiday just to give you more money for no good reason? NEVER...only for cops...why? They chose a job, they do a job...just like everyone else. No different...just because it's dangerous does't make it more of a job...it's just their job. Some are harder than others which is why they make more per year...they don't get special holidays and money for no reason. Pull you head out of your as* or out of the cops lap and join the rest of us here in the world ...the majority of people can't all be wrong
  • X9X · 1 year ago
    Smitty:
I only hope you live in Peabody so your taxes can pay for this utter nonsense. I just read an article that stated NO OTHER PD IN THE COUNTRY has 9-11 as a holiday.
Please tell me again.....Exactly how many Peabody cops died rescuing people on 9-11-01??
  • feedback · 1 year ago
how many of you died for memorial day but I bet you get your holiday pay for that
  • Admiral · 1 year ago
Why do they need 9/11 pay. Where they there?
  • DISGUSTED · 1 year ago
This is the most unbelieveable thing . My husband who is a Firefighter in NJ was THERE the day after 9/11 for months. He was working on rescue and recovery. He doesn't get holiday pay. What makes Peabody Police think they deserve holiday pay for a day that is not a holiday. For a day in which none of them were there helping to find there brothers in the rubble. It makes me ILL. If the city council passes this just so they can get the cops to drug test, they are even MORE pathetic and UN AMERICAN than these cops who think that they deserve to get paid. What about the cops and Fireman who were there. You don't see them running to their Unions crying for Holiday pay. Watch out Peabody you have opened up a can of worms that is going to make Peabody the most DISRESPECTED Police Department in the country.
  • feedback · 1 year ago
I bet your husband's gets memorial day pay I bet you have no problem spending that money do you and you might even get memorial day pay and you did not fight for this country so stuff another cup cake in it.
  • crazyasacoolfox · 1 year ago
This article sounds suspiciously like the comment I posted on yesterday's article:

Holiday pay for 9/11? Are you kidding me? 9/11 isn't even a national nor state holiday. It's not even one of those crazy Suffolk County holidays that ALL state workers get off.

Since when does the PPD have ANYTHING at all (besides losing union brothers) that went on in NYC or the Pentagon? Are they that traumatized that they need another paid day off?

I don't hear many WWII era workers and vets whining for a paid holiday for the December 7th attack on Pearl Harbor. PPD should take a lesson from them.

Just a show of hands here, if you want to respond. Let me know if there are ANY companies or government agencies that are allowing 9/11 paid holiday? I'm curious. I doubt many DIRECT vicitms of 9/11 get that day off, never mind get a paid day off. Again PPD should take a lesson from them.

Shame on PPD and their agents for using this sensitive time in our nations history for their own personal gain.

Plain and simple.........If NYC police and firefighters don't get ANYTHING for 9/11 why the HELL should Peabody cops get anything? What about families whose lives were forever changed by losing a loved one ?? Should they get a paid holiday ?? The problem with this is it is NOT considered a "holiday". So if you want to compensate, how do you start and where does it end ???
  • Lynnitis · 1 year ago
Yes a new low in city contracts for public sector workers.
First the Firemen lost many more people than the Cops did.
Second and most important, your regular average everyday worker had the most loss of life on 9/11 not the cops or firemen.
Yes a new low using 9/11 a national tradgedy to gain Holiday pay for the Peabody police, I mean how much lower can you go for TOTAL DISRESPECT!!!!!

Yes, Peabody has opened up a can of worms and hopefully will now be the laughing stock of the USA.
Peabody City Council, you had best nix this 9/11 holiday provision from the contract if you want to save your respectability as elected public servants who are supossed to represent the Citizens.

JUST WAIT UNTIL YOU SEE THE TEACHERS CONTRACT. vOTE YES ON QUESTION #1
  • nbypt1 · 1 year ago
Sure, give the cops holiday pay on a non-holiday....that makes sense. While we're at it, why not let them bloat their salaries by paying them to watch a hole get dug on the side of a road...oh, nevermind, we already let them do that.

    Question 1...YES
  • ritchie · 1 year ago
I hope the citizens of Peabody call the city Hall numerous times and complain about this pathetic union scheme.
  • ritchie · 1 year ago
Nice, 5% raise , retroactive to July.
  • can'tbelieveit · 1 year ago
This is so embarrassing. Peabody cops should not be paid for this day. Also, how can ANYBODY ever call that terrible day a holiday? A HOLIDAY? My cousin was working across the street from the twin towers when they collapsed. He said they were the most terrifying hours of his life. I doubt anybody that was there (I don't think that includes Peabody cops) would ever think of 9/11 as anything remotely like a holiday.
  • feedback · 1 year ago
how about memorial day were you there fighting for this country I bet for the men and women who were in the different wars thought those were the most terrifying hours of their lives but people all over this country every year who never even spent a day in the military get their holiday pay and have the day off for memorial day , fourth of July or Martin Luther King day . It's not a holiday it a day to remember those who have fallen for this country.
  • Peabody Man · 1 year ago
Peabody Police should be ashamed of themselves for trying to make financial gain out of a tragic day in history. Total disrespect for all good tax paying americans IMO.
  • What A Joke · 1 year ago
poor request on the Peabody Cops part... Ask for Easter Sunday or Boxing Day or Groundhogs Day... Not 9/11. That is not a day we should get more money for... That is a Day we should take our pay and Donate it to a real charity.... What a Joke..... Nobody is talking about the 5% raise ont op of 2%. WOW......
  • Civil Servant · 1 year ago
You people who are the usual police bashers should be ashamed of yourself. Are you kidding me! Maybe instead of bashing the PPD you should be pleading to the government to make 9/11 a holiday to remember those who were lost on that day. 9/11 changed this country and to ignore that is ashame. Its about time that the government started to remember that day and make it an official day to remember. I am sure that the NYPD and NYFD would agree with me. I wonder what all you people that are bashing this contract were doing on this 9/11 to remember those who were lost. I know what I did and I will continue to remember and I can look myself in the mirror at night.
I am sure the members of the PPD would step up to the plate in any major crisis and I can account first hand of them doing so. On a night back in November of 2006 the Danvers explosion occurred and members of the PPD including myself were in Danvers at 3am evacuating those who were injured due to the explosion. And many PPD members came from their homes while off duty to assist with the evacuation. These officers were not asked by the department to do this. They called the PPD when they woke up due to the explosion and asked what happened. They then volunteered to help their fellow man kind and brother officers and firefighters in an emergency situation. Keeping in mind that in the immediate hours following the explosion rescue workers were unsure of what if anything toxic was burning. What were you bashers doing that morning at 3am?
  • Harry Fong · 1 year ago
And when if/when it becomes a holiday, then they should get holiday pay.
There is no way to defend or spin this story. It's completely humiliating to the PPD
  • crazyasacoolfox · 1 year ago
Don't worry Civil Servant, aka Doug, I'm sure you will be getting the day before Thanksgiving as a paid holiday too.
  • sickofurcrap · 1 year ago
Nonsense Civil Servant. Pure Garbage shame on you and the Union here in Peabody. Sickening.
  • MyNameIsVall · 1 year ago
We can all remember that day just fine thank you very much. No need for ANY American to sit at home drinking beer and gettin' paid on the memory of that dark time. And I'm sure all the right-thinking members of the PPD would agree. This empty-headed gesture was just the work of a few over-the-top labor negotiators. Instead of painting with a broad brush, why not call them out and shame them instead of the hard-working cops or the folks who see empty symbolism for what it is?
  • feedback · 1 year ago
Memorial day is a dark time also but you have no problem sitting out in your back yards drinking beer and cooking on the grill how about the men and women who died for memorial day. Unless this issue is pushed the Federal Goverment will not take any steps in remembering this day and neither will any of you. You will go to work just like any other day, well maybe now it will become a Federal Holiday so it's not just like any other day.

hey civil servant - guess what? we pay you to protect us and get up at 3AM. Do you get paid for those hours? Yeah - you probably received double time. Of course we needed the WHOLE peabody police department to get donuts for fellow officers too. Make sure there was enough coffee as well. Must have needed a BUNCH of detail cops as well. how much Money did you make that day? have some guts and tell us.
This holiday for you is ridiculous. NYPD and NYFD SHOULD get it off. NOT you. or maybe you should get the Danvers explosion as a holiday? You probably question why paid details are going away. it is things like this. We are FED UP! Enough already.

    WAAAAA! WAAAAA!WAAAA!
Listen to you idiots asking why should they get the day off for 9/11. First off cops dont get Holidays off. They work Holidays while the rest of you idiots are with your family. They are getting time and a quarter which is about 30 bucks extra for the day once a year. BIG friggen deal. Most of you idiots who work a Holiday get time and a half or double time. As for you morons asking were the Peabody officers there on 9/11 The answer is No. but were you there When Jesus was born on Christmas Day. Were you there when Columbus discovered America? Were you there when the pilgrims landed ? Were you there when The Declaration of Independence? What is the difference. All you cop haters that say the police are so stupid It looks like they are a little bit smarter than the rest of you when it comes to bargaining a contract. Dont hate because they came up with the idea first!!!
Dont worry all you haters, the police have many other details beside road jobs to make extra cash. Football games, grocery stores , bank details,Court time especially court time involving citations because all you punks are getting fines from here on in. So go ahead and appeal those tickets you get because it means 3 hours o.t. for 5 minutes worth of testilying .I mean testifying
  • crazyasacoolfox · 1 year ago
Ice, read my earlier post. Why didn't those of WWII era, "the greatest generation" ever ask for holiday pay after the December 7th attack on Pearl Harbor?

Do you know why? They are a generation of greater moral fiber, they did nothing but give of themselves to their country. When asked to do a job they did it, without complaint, and they put their heart and soul into it. They never whined or complained that their country should compensate them for the trauma they incurred on December 7th, 1941.

Our generation is nothing but the gimme generation. We take advantage of any situation to make a buck. I'ts appalling to hear that the PPD has used this sanctified date in the life of our nation to strip more money from the the backs of the already cash strapped tax payers of Peabody.

Ice are you using your constitution powers to threaten the public because we are voicing our opinion? I quote,
"Football games, grocery stores , bank details,Court time especially court time involving citations because all you punks are getting fines from here on in. So go ahead and appeal those tickets you get because it means 3 hours o.t. for 5 minutes worth of testilying .I mean testifying,"

That sounds like a threat to me. You of all people should know what a threat is. It's a form of retaliation and intimidation. Basically you are using your power to bully. That shouldn't be tolerated by anyone including police officers.

Again I say shame on you PPD.
  • X9X · 1 year ago
ICE isn't the first flatfoot in here to make that threat.
That's OK, ICE, 'cause I've got news for you. I recently retired from a job at a large public utility that was forced to hire you leeches, er, I mean 'details' on a daily basis. I spent 26 years being chased down dead-end streets, being forced to hire a detail, and seeing how all you hard-working detail cops earn your money. Showing up an hour or two late, going to cashing your check, running every errand you can think of, two or three 'toilet' breaks of an hour each, two hour lunch breaks, etc., etc., etc. Most of you never spent more than 3 hours out of a 10 hour day on the job.
You cops like to threaten people with "testilying", and court time?? Let me tell you what I'm gonna do. Since I'm retired now, and have NOTHING else to do, I'm gonna make it my life's work to film and document different details EVERY day of the week, in different cities and towns. My old co-workers will be happy to inform me when and where the biggest dickheads will be on detail. I will film and document the entire day. I'll make it a point to film you at football games, bank details, bars, and anywhere else you are stiffing the public on your details. I'm pretty good at finding cops sleeping on the job, too.
You like to make threats?? How's mine sound for you?
Don't forget to look over your shoulder at your next detail....If you see someone with a video camera, that's me.
You, too, 'Joey'. It'll be easy proving that you falsified documents by signing your name to a detail slip showing you 'worked' 9 hours, but was only there for 2 hours.
Have fun, cause I'll be watching. And I hope I gave the idea to do this to several dozen other people who will do the same thing.......Enjoy, you POS.

They are going to be the most DISRESPECTED department. Wait until the NYPD and NYFD get wind of this, and they will. Not one of the folks who have posted here would deny a cop getting paid for a REAL HOLIDAY. Next time the department is looking for donations or help from their community do you really think people will be as willing if they get this in their contract. • Shooter · 1 year ago
Listen, I agree that extra pay for 9/11 is a ridiculous idea. I also agree that there are cops who abuse the system, work a ton of overtime and make good money. Hell, for the most part, the system itself is flawed. There are a few things that you need to understand. First, the cops making a ton of money are working a ton of overtime; it’s published in this same paper every year. It’s mainly the guys salaried at 50K, working 60-80 hours a week to try and double their salary. Second, most of the people who say that cops are crooked are simply those who have been on the wrong side of the law, and have had to pay for it. Not to say that there isn’t corruption, tragically the 2 hiring systems allow for that. With Civil Service, it’s not “the best man/woman for the job” it’s based off a standardized test, residency, and demographics. In non-civil service towns, hiring tends to be very incestuous. If we revised the hiring process, we could better ensure the quality of officers put onto the streets.
The final issue I want to touch on is the issue of risk vs. compensation. A previous post referred to police deaths in 2007, and other ‘labor’ related job deaths from surrounding years. The most fundamental difference is that in a police officer’s job, THERE ARE PEOPLE TRYING TO KILL YOU. The deaths in these other jobs are purely accidental, most of which could probably have been prevented. I know that police understand the risks of the job, but that doesn’t make it any less tragic. Yes, you could be a clerk at a 7-Eleven and be shot in a robbery, or mugged on your way home from work, but police are in the face of it day in, day out. Its not always a gangbanger with a gun, it could be as easy as the dangers of a hi-speed chase while trying to stop a drunk driver before they crash into your family on your way home from dinner. They don’t avoid the danger and the scum, they put themselves there to try and keep it away from the rest of the world. And if there is a cop not doing his/her job, they should be removed. Real life is not the movies.

  • America; can't afford Obama · 1 year ago
Everyone knows the risk when they take the job, civilian or cop, and that's what they get paid for. Police deaths on duty, are very low, but they always cry what a dangerous job. It's clearly much less dangerous than many other jobs and you don't hear those other people crying about it, if you don't like the risks that come with your job, quit. I don't want to hear your whining when your getting paid to do a job. In a time of war, when our troops are in "REAL" danger, and only make a quarter of what a cop does and don't whine, the cops should tone it down! Now "high speed" police chases, that's a whole nother issue, with innocent civilians taking many of the injuries and deaths. Like many states have done, they should be banned, except for the most extreme cases, they pose to great of a risk to the general public.

    To the Peabody Officers:
If you read through these posts, no once is complaining about 1) the pay raise 2) the increase in compensation for certification or 3) retrocative increase. More than likely 90% of the posts feel that random drug testing shgould be requred for both our safety ans also yours. I would doubt you want to be in a situation where your fellow officer is on some drugs.
Most people also agree that paid details are necessary on most roads. Just not the roads that have a dead end street, and you must agree some of these details ( say 10%) are not needed. Also, you are underpaid with your salaries. There is no question, but when the details are overblown, that is where the issue comes in. But....
EVERONE is complaining about September 11th paid holiday. Not for the money as much as the disrepect it shows for the NYPD/NYFD and the matter that you were not a part of it. You choose to take this holiday away you will no longer here the bad comments, but also have the respect for many people here. Do the right thing. Remove it from the contract.

We understand the fact that peabody police were not there in NY it is not there to disrespect the people that were there it was intended to memoralize the people who where there and hopefully force the federal goverment into making this a federal holiday , so people young and old never forget that our country came under attack that day and thousands died. I dont hear people complaining about being paid for memorial day why not millions have lost there lives for that holiday and most people get the day off and extra pay for that one. Police do not get the day off on 911 they work a 4 day on 2 day off shift so you work holidays and 24/7 unless it falls on your regular day off.

Once again it is time for the nuts to come out with critical comments!! Until you have done the police officers job or were a family member of a victum to be able to say they do not deserve any thing you best know this. Until you go to any scene of death or see one, don't comment. Until you have seen human bone at an accident ,don't comment. Until you have seen some body hanging, don't comment . Until you see someone with self inflicted gun shot to the head, don't comment. Until you have had to pick human flesh from a wall and ceiling in hopes of using it to make the person whole again ,don't comment. Until you nearly kneel in a human brain looking for a missing accident victum thought to be under a car ,don't comment. When you've gone to a large party on old Summit Ave . voluntarily and alone and then gave warning to over 200 people to leave then don't comment [they took that advise with no injury to any one. ] Until you have sat across a table with a young man threatening to kill himself and you, don't comment . Until you have advised a parent to be more watchful of their boys after several arrests and then paid a price for having done so many years after ,don't comment. Until you need the police ,ambulance, or, other emergency agencies, don't comment. Until you go to a motorcycle or mini bike accident an do your best to save a life only to be futile in the attempt then don't comment. - The police of my day up to the present have to be some one special to do the job of picking up after the human failings and unforseen circumstances of any incident that has risen. To be able to do that you have to be "special" . Before you become an officer you have to pass tests to see if your able to do these things that are required of a police officer. Thats not to say that once on as a police officer that at a later time it doesn't cause one to do things contrary of being a police officer. In my time I had seen a few officers go down the tubes mostly because of the job and its requirements. If your so police hating then call one of your "friends" to give you the help you need . Judge not unless you be judged and remember not all police officers are the same and not unlike the fingers of your hand. Those "fingers" do the job as a unit. I ask this, you would you do that job an take the public abuse they do? I think not unless your special !! They deserve the pay they get and more even if it is their own choice of doing so. Sorry for the rant but I'm fed up with the jerks who see nothing but themselves.

You kidding maybe its taxpayers expressing angry towards people like you who rob us every day. Looking in holes, talking on cell phones, claiming its in Public Safety interest using state issued gas cards on your own vehicles, now your taking a tragic day and turning it into another day for you to get paid. This is absurd. NY Cops and Firefighters don't get this day as Holiday pay. But for some reason Peabody does. Can you explain why Peabody gets a Holiday when no one else in the country gets it. Not even the families who on 9-11 dropped off a love one at Logan and never saw them again. Babies who were not born yet never heard dad say good night. But you think Peabody deserves to have Holiday pay. When the planes hit I assume most of you were working details or hanging at D and D glued to the TV. So how did it effect you. So now you blame the taxpayers for bashing cops. Well if the cops thought about what they were doing in taking this day as Holiday pay then maybe they would see where we are coming from. How many cops died, how many firefighters died, how many working class people died, oh by the way most cops were just transit police not even real officers. Why again does Peabody deserve this day. All I hear from Cop supporters is oh stop whining, oh you hate cops because you were arrested. Well I never was, never had a ticket. So can someone out there please explain to us as to why Peabody Police should get this day as a paid holiday. My only thought is to cover the increased health bills. E.g. ER visit up, co pay up. This is the only reason I see why this section of the contract was passed. Way to destroy your own reputation. Its not us who signed the contract were just commenting on the story. If you dont like what were saying maybe its time to revise that section of your contract. Again write tickets, make arrest and I would be more then happen to increase your pay. I work for my money. If I dont close deals I dont get paid. So why should cops get paid if they dont enforce the law. Wish I could sleep in a car for 8 hrs and get paid. Must be nice to take advantage of the people your suppose to protect and serve. Instead you rob and steal from us then complain that we bash cops. Stop whining and do your job and if you dont like it. Well I know D and D is hiring and we all know cops know how to work there because they spend so much time there. Again this is not whining its expressing my 1st Amendment something my forefathers fought for and something cops forefathers have no clue of its meaning cause if you did you would see where we are coming from.

yup and I bet you spend the extra money you earn for memorial day. Maybe this will get the Federal Goverment off their lazy a##es and force this issue that 911 SHOULD BE MADE A FEDERAL HOLIDAY for everyone young and old so we dont forget that our country came under attack and killed thousands of Americans and two of those planes took off from Logan Airport. well Uncle Sam, thats why I keep saying that the Peabody Police are the worst Police Dept, there is NO OTHER POLICE DEPT in this country that has Sept 11th as a Holiday, but yet the Peabody Police do?!?!?! What the hell is wrong in peabody? Cant the citizens there protest this? Next thing you know is they will want Wednesday as a holiday, just because its a wednesday....un F ing believable. Maybe if they did their jobs (at all) maybe we could consider it, but they do nothing now.
  • Guest · 1 year ago
This is very simple to argue. How can you receive holiday pay when in fact it is not a holiday that is not recognized federally, state level or even at the town level? You can't! I believe the Mayor would be extremely foolish to allow this to go on when we are going through hard economic times. The Police Union has received a very generous contract and they should be smart and strike this provision in the contract. Remember we hold the power to show government what we feel is appropriate, by telling them or by voting them out. We are fortunate that we have Question 1 to show them that they can not abuse their residents any longer!
  • Outraged · 1 year ago
This is horrible. They should be ashamed of themselves for asking for this. In my eyes, this is making money off the blood of Americans. And any reasonable American should be disgusted at the thought of that. NOBODY should get holiday pay on 9/11, no matter what their occupation. It should simply be a day of rememberance, not a day to rack up extra pay.

DISGUSTING! EVERYONE in the city should MAKE Sure our lazy politicians know FULL WELL how disgusted we are with this. It is an EMBARRASSMENT. The Mayor and the peabrains Council are crying poor and want to look to ways to raise property taxes, so they can give it away to the lowlife extortionist police unions. And you can BE the Fire Union isn't far behind. These pathetic cops have NO shame. We should also make sure the police and firemen down in NYC (you know, the ONES WHO WERE THERE) are aware of how our lazy greedy scumbags are "honoring" them by taking advantage of what THEY went through. Don't let this stand. They are a joke. Remember this on Election day, and when the clowns want to raise property taxes. The double time should come out of Bettencourt's freakin' pocket

I think it is a fanatic day for Peabody Police officers to decided to pick for a holiday .. What other day would they pick? I think it is about time that all of our government takes it from Peabody police and realize that it should be a national holiday. They had the guts to pick a day to honor their fellow officers that died on a day we all should remember . I don't know what the big deal is. We shouldn't we all be applauding Peabody Police officers.
  • Outraged · 1 year ago
There's nothing wrong with honoring those who have fallen on a national holiday. Its when people want to make extra money on something that involved the spilled blood of 3,000 Americans on a specific occasion that I have a problem with it. Especially your police dept, who definitely weren't the ones running into the towers that day. You can honor heroes without asking for extra pay.

The police officers received another paid Holiday in their agreement. They picked September 11 in Honor of all that died that day. Which you know that the people that were on the planes were our neighbors. I do agree that it should be Federal Holiday but I am proud of Peabody Police Department for stepping up and being the first to realize it and Making it one. Which would mean everyone gets paid extra for working it just like every other Holiday, But it also means if you would like to take the day off to honor those who died you have a choice to work or not. If you read the agreement you might find out the details of it.

The headline states that Peabody could be first in the State to have 9/11 as a paid holiday, that doesnt say much for many of the other corrupt police departments in the state, it shouldnt be a negotiation to consent to random drug screening it should be written into the contract no questions asked, or is the force afraid of how many people will be put out on unpaid leave because they fail the tests??? Peabody, Swampscott, Hamilton and Salem Police Departments are really helping the North Shore look our best Thanks Boys/Girls in Blue keep up the Good Job........
  • Business Owner · 1 year ago
The most important thing we are all forgetting. How about the Police, Fire, EMT and Volunteer, and people who had a family/friend/associate who died on 9/11in NYC, did you see them get a day off of remembrance. Peabody Police weren't there...they didn't fight the fire, fight the madness, shed a tear...get a grip. Maybe if one or two might have gone to help, thank you, but the whole department wasn't there. We are in a crisis in Massachusetts losing Money daily, the stocks are down, small business are closing, people are losing their homes and the Peabody Police get paid a day and a quarter (to work) and a full paid day off for 9/11. Get a grip! I am glad they have their priorties in order and I hope Mayor Bonfanti, the Union Representative for the Peabody Police Department as well as the Officers in this department are ashamed of themselves to only recognize their own self pity of a day off before thinking of the ones who really are the ones who would ever deserve this day as a Holiday. You all are a disgrace!

So when the federal Government finally steps up and makes it a legal holiday it will be OK ??? but because Peabody Police officers decided to do it first they are the ones getting the flack ..

Wake up people it isn't he pay it is the day that they wanted to honor

So why isn't pearl harbor a paid holiday? It's all about the money, or else they would have some type of remembrance without the extra pay.
  • PFFM · 1 year ago
As a proud firefighter and Union local, PFFM and IAFF member and citizen of the USA, I am truly disgusted, angered and shocked by the actions of the Peabody Police Union, its members and the city/town officials who asked for and voted this “holiday” into effect. For a public safety department that is more than 250 miles away from ground zero, and 450 miles away from the Pentagon, to be asking for and granted this holiday bonus money is disgrace, and to say it's to remember the lives lost by police officers that day is just wrong. There are many other ways to remember your brave fellow brothers and sisters than to put a little extra cash in your wallets. Sure firefighters, police officers, EMT’s and first responders that were killed that day get a lot of attention and deservingly so because of the heroic and tragic way they were murdered, but what about the guy working on 95th floor of tower, the one with a wife, or the women who had to jump from the 100th floor with the 3 kids at home from tower 2, or the flight attends and pilots and the people traveling on those plans for work or pleasure.... what about their families? So now what about the pilots union, do they get the paid holiday, or the flight attends union, or the EMT’s working the private ambulances that day that didn’t have a union and were killed? How about the cleaning lady that was working her 12 hour shift in tower 2 when she was murdered. 9/11 was a day when people were murdered working, going to work and just plain innocent victims. In no way should anyone be making a profit on this event. What do you think the NYPD and FDNY would say if someone had proposed a “holiday” on 9/11 with raise of 1 and ¼ your daily rate? I think there would be some angry firefighters and cops. I take this personally, if my union had ever brought this up in a meeting I can tell you I would be so %$*&$^ ! I would have to be held back from the person who proposed this. Since this is already voted in and I believe a part of their contract now, I can only hope that there are members of the PPD that feel the same way I do and should try to make a right out this wrong. I purpose to you and your family members that anyone who receives “holiday pay and/or OT rate” (meaning anything above your normal days pay excluding, time off, details etc.) should make a donation in that amount to a charity, to one the hundreds that help the victims of 9/11 that are living and deceased and their families. I hope your lack in judgment does not continue, this is not a day that deserves "holiday" pay bonuses. So please think of another way to remember your fallen officers than to make 9/11 a paid holiday, how about a blood drive, or maybe choose an officer that was murdered every year and do a fundraiser for that officer's family, but please DO NOT PROFIT from this horrible tragedy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • feedback · 1 year ago
Just like you donate your money from memorial day , please you think nothing of sitting in your back yard drinking your beer all at the expense of the men and women who have fallen for this country so come down off your high horse. There was never any intent on cashing in at the expense of the men, women, children that died that day. Explain why our federal goverment cant even finish the memorial that they started years ago to honor those who lost their lives and last but not least if you stop for one moment Massachusetts should have stepped up sooner it all started at our airport just 15 miles down the road and please let not start throwing stones at each others Unions you guys have enough problems lets not go there.

If they picked Sept 15 would anybody be upset about this 11 or does anyone know what Sept 15 th is ???????

I stood outside my Middle School on 9/11 staring at the big cloud of debris in the sky. I went to school that morning staring at the NYC skyline, now I stare at chaos not knowing if my family survived the deadly attack. I also did not know the state of my friends fathers who were police men and probably at the scene. Some died and others are fortunately alive. But guess what they work on 9/11 like it is every other day. Sure they attend memorials, but they don't get compensated. This sickens me that a bunch of cops from Peabody get off or get paid more on a day they had little to nothing to do with. Did you run in and carry an elderly woman on your back down ten flights of stairs as a man I have been blessed to know did, NO. I wouldn't mind if this was initiated by the state of MA since obviously people helped out and I wouldn't see it as a selfish act, but for a town to do it.

Sorry but I feel like what I am about to say presents a stronger message and I hope the Peabody Police Union reads this. My friend is a panicked mess, he is paranoid. His father is a police officer and was one of the first responders. He is still alive and continues to work. Although my friend is better, he still worries while his Dad is on the job. The kids life is miserable, he can't enjoy himself when his Dad is working.

SO explain why some cops in Peabody, MA get 9/11 off or get paid more while his Dad works.
