It's a has been old fart newspaper that has been losing subscribers for years. Whenever they need to sell newspapers they play the Police card. I'm a little torn on this issue. I understand why the police are upset. They could be losing a HUGE chunk of their income. Let's face it, that sucks. This is not a good time to take a reduction in pay. Honestly, though I don't think the police officers add anything to construction sites. I just went through a construction site this afternoon. The site was on the other side of the street. I had people flying over the double yellow lines and nearly taking me out. The officer was not directing traffic, he was talking on his cell phone and looking into the hole. I honestly can't remember the last time a detail officer made traffic around a construction site easier. If the officers want to continue getting this overtime pay, I say sure, as long as they are actually OUT OF THE CRUISERS (no matter the weather), directing traffic. No more sitting in the car/chatting on the cell phone/looking into the holes.. An honest day's work for a day's pay. That's all reasonable people want from the officers on detail.

Re: Our view: New policy on details off to troubling start

YOU DO SOME RESEARCH!! I am well aware that in this economic downward spiral EVERYONE is feeling the cash crunch. For details to be the most commented on topic is not surprising. People need to do a little more research before attacking all details.
I agree that some cops, like every other professional group of people, have idiots who use their passion and enthusiasm in a counter-productive manner (see Woburn incident). I am aware that these people are the ones who get the media attention. I will be the first to say though that this is a small number of the police population. For most, paid details are a second job. Police salaries dont cover rising costs of living etc. that all of us are dealing with. Flagmen are only getting between $3-$8 more an hour than police. Police have also agreed to be paid the state wage in some cases. So for the same wage, do you want extra cops on the road or some civilian crossing guard? Questions about this wage rate, DO SOME RESEARCH!
It is also true about some not paying attention. Let me tell you though, the driver's inattention is what is dangerous. Instead of making blanket statements, take the civil service test in the Spring, make pennies for 6-7 months in the academy, and join a department.....unless you wont pass the backgound or are too fat to go over the wall, which is a possibility considering all the posts every day about details by the same people.

Re: Our view: New policy on details off to troubling start

Huh?

Re: Our view: New policy on details off to troubling start

MT again you head is MT. Learn to spell. First I was only using a few examples of cops looking out for one another. If you want I can show you tons of stories of cops getting away with everything including murder. How bout the guy in NY that was leaving his Bachelor party had a wallet in his hand and cops shot him 51 times. Then it was investigated and it was a justified shooting. Or what about the cops caught on video beating people the proof is in the video but again cops investigate cops and again these cops were not charged. So get your head full because right now its MT.

Re: Our view: New policy on details off to troubling start

Yes, Weld did it to MASS HIGHWAY and it blew up in his face!!!! attempted to sell off and shut down many state highway properties laid off staff. The end result it cost the state more when they hired contractors and thats a fact!!!! Just look at the Danvers State Police Barracks, this used to be a Mass Highway office, Weld said he could get a very large amount of money at the time for the sale of the property ( I cant remember figure off hand ) and money would go back to state. What happened? any other state agency or city or town has right to get property before any attempts are made to sell it!. End result state police moved from peabody barracks to Mass Highways shut down building!!! Way to go weld and Privitization!!!!!!

Same thing in Arlington / Town got Mass Highway property

Re: Our view: New policy on details off to troubling start

If your worried about being ready for a shooting or stabbing don't work 40+ hours of overtime, then you will be able to stay up for your midnight shift and won't have to sleep in your cruiser during your shift!!! Lt. Bettencourt was tried convicted sentenced lost his job and his pension. In my town a police officer caught stealing money about 2 years ago was charged by his own police department, convicted, sentenced, lost his job and his pension. Another police officer was fired for having a fake id in order to play in the over 30 softball. Another police officer in this same town was arrested for violating a restraining order was convicted and placed in jail. These are facts and i these things were all done by their own police department. I think you spend too much time believing what the tv shows portray as real life police stories. They are not factual.

Re: Our view: New policy on details off to troubling start

America,

Could you or somebody else please elaborate on why privatizing would be a bad idea? Have you seen what happens to cops who commit crime. Other cops investigate and nothing happens. They should see the toughest punishments because they swore to uphold the law under oath. So they lied. Cops investigate cops that is corruption. I mean do we have gangbangers investigate gangbangers. NOPE. But cops do. The crime is they stick together because they all are corrupt.

Re: Our view: New policy on details off to troubling start

Can't you people tell a troll when you see one? Whatever happened to that. Having cops on details is a waste of state funds. Police details do not "save lives" and the actions of those officers yesterday show that they put so many people in danger. Let's face it people...isn't always about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$4

Re: Our view: New policy on details off to troubling start

It would seem to me that both the state and the police have valid arguments, it just depends upon the place and time. I have gone by road work sites where there was clearly no need for a police officer to be working in the interest of public safety. There was little traffic and little potential for any problems. However, there are other times when a police officer is clearly needed, whether it is on a highway or busy street during heavy commute times. I think the crux of the matter is developing a fair system of how to choose which group is needed..
