The Salem News: Our view: New policy on details off to troubling start

  • rentacop · 1 year ago
To IAMACOP and HHERBOT oh did my comments offend you. The truth hurts you scum of the earth. Stop lying, cheating, drug dealing, stealing, raping, acting like fools, drunk driving, kidnapping and getting paid to do it. Then maybe people will show you respect. Lawerence cop rapes and kidnaps, Swampscott cop deals drugs out of police car in uniform, State Police play golf on taxpayers dime, State Police deal drugs, Boston police deal drugs, police cheat on test. These are just a few reason why your worthless. Until you prove other wise I wish financial hardship on all badges. As your more corrupt then Whitey and his Goons.

It is time to privatize these civil service jobs. The taxpayers are getting raked over the coals every time there is an issue.

These unions are bullying our leaders into ridiculous contracts. City and town negotiators need to start sending messages to these unions that enough is enough. If the unions balk at a contract, then don't hire them. Replace them with a private workforce . Eventually, these union guys (if they are actually qualified enough) will end up working for the private workforce.

It will initially be painful for most cities and towns, but eventually it will be accepted and start working in our favor. The initial pain will still be better than the prolonged agony that these greedy unions are placing on us now and into the future.

We need to stand up and say ENOUGH to these bullies. They are the minority. The people that pay their ridiculous expenses are the majority.

All officers and union abusers, please respond with your irrelevant examples of why you and your unions should be allowed to continue fleecing the public.

Folks, you HAVE to go to myfoxboston.com and find the protest video. You will see for yourself just how "concerned" for safety all those overweight, idiot cops are in their baseball hats. Standing in the road yelling at the flagman "you are just ascared". Can you believe that retard is a cop and probably gets 5 to 10 grand extra per year in Quinn bill money? Only in Massachusetts.
  • mark · 1 year ago
any one who bothers these flagmen shoud be put in jail .cops are so greedy.
  • KPMWinslowme · 1 year ago
The police in this country local, state and nationally, have become a gestapo organization. Their "Them or Us" attitude is part of what is wrong with America today. It is a scary thought but we are becoming more and more like Nazi germany in the thirties. Democracy does not thrive in a "police state"....

  • Sftgrl · 1 year ago
What's that? Stand around with your back to traffic while drinking coffee and chatting with the utility workers?

Oh, wait - maybe it's attempting to direct traffic around a work zone when no direction is needed causing a bottleneck and backups during commute times?

Ohhhh, wait. I have it now: It's standing around with a gun feeling superior to all those around you while you collect huge overtime pay for doing not much of anything. Yeah, that's the ticket.
  • ktrainer · 1 year ago
    so true sooooo true.

I love how talking on a cell-phone while drinking a cup of coffee is considered a professional skill only police can do.

They never direct traffic either. I mean what is there job actually? just stand there?
  • HHerbot · 1 year ago
52 minutes ago huh? That would put you somwhere in the ballpark of 10am. Hmmm does the boss know you're commenting about standing around and chatting while on company time? Maybe you should look at it from a police officers point of view mind you I am one who doesn't work a lot of details.but let me explain. I work midnight to 8. When I come home at 830 in the morning my wife is gone off to work. I then sleep only to be back in on a short day at 4pm....which means, you guessed it! Again not eating or sleeping with my family at night. So god forbid I work a detail after being up all night and sip on a cup of coffee!!! Which I'm sure youre probably not doing at your desk right now right? I mean you wouldnt be having a cup of coffee on your way to work would you? NO way that's impossible. Now let's touch upon the cell phone issue. So i dont see my wife or daughter because I have no choice but to work midnights. Please tell me again how BAD it is that I ask how my child is doing. Or how my wife's night went sleeping alone for the 5th day in a row!! I mean you being on your cell phone WHILE OPERATING A MOTOR VEHICLE!!! that never happens does it?
I only suggest to you this bit of advice. Allow for extra time in the morning to check all of your lights and make sure there's no bulbs out, I would hate to have to write a ticket for that. Oh and that conversation in the morning you have with your friend or significant other, that sounds like negligent operation of a motor vehicle to me.

  • Angry_Danvers_Man · 1 year ago
I think it should only take an hour or so to learn the proper eating technique of a donut, or it might take longer to learn to speak Spanish and communicate with the person digging the hole that you're staring into instead of watching traffic.

Check out today's Boston Globe, with video, for the illegal actions of police officers in response to yesterday's use of civilian flaggers. Hopefully the rogue cops in the video are prosecuted and fired from their jobs. Time for the police to understand they are not above the law.

Hows the retirement at the Canadian owned Ottaway newspaper . It's great to send your money to Canada when you buy this idiotic paper.
  • Harry · 1 year ago
This is the most moronic comment of the day on many levels. The Salem News has been sold twice since Ottaway owned it, once to Lawrence-Eagle and then again to an Atlanta, GA newspaper conglomerate -- the current owner. Ottaway is NOT Canadian. It is owned by Dow Jones! Dow Jones!!! Your not smart enough figure out the difference between a Canadian city -- Ottawa -- and the name of a business and its founder -- Ottaway.

On your last sentence, you are a bigger idiot than you suggest if YOU bought this paper. We're all online here. Nobody pays for the paper online.

But please keep commenting. It can only get richer.
  • tytl · 1 year ago
All cops are not like these losers who are going out and causing trouble. However, if the good cops don't want to lose the respect of their bosses, us, they need to stand up and speak against these thugs.

I don't think that any cop who is out there breaking the law should be allowed to keep his job. After all, they were hired to uphold it not break it.
  • flagman · 1 year ago
I thought the reason cops think they should get each and every detail is for public safety? Tell me how them showing up at jobsites and harassing flagmen makes the area SAFER?
    Rob? I_am_a_cop? Can you explain?
Use spell check first if you can figure it out, thanks.

You guys are full of it and your bully tactics will LOSE.
  • Not A Senior · 1 year ago
Like someone wrote yesterday, if citizens did to detail cops what the cops did to the flaggers, they would be arrested. Police have become like thugs. No wonder they are losing the respect of people. I feel bad for the many good police officers. They have to pay the price for the losers.
  • My $.02 · 1 year ago
There is a way for the Police to try to preserve doing Details, and this is not the way. All they are doing is shooting themselves in the foot. And these "thugs" as the general public has named them, are giving ALL of the Police Officers a bad name. Personally, if I was a regular cop who was not acting like a child (thug), I'd be pretty upset at a small number of officers giving me and my reputation a bad name, one that I don't deserve.
  • flagman · 1 year ago
You have any idea how many good and honest cops are riduculed by the other cops when they stand up for honestry and integrity? A lot of cops are just cowardly sheep following the bullying herd.
  • Denice · 1 year ago
If this was Canada, Police would be beating people up in the street. It would be an "accepted practice". Keep buying the Salem News/Ottaway Newspaper and send your money out of the country to Canada. Hey Salem News, when you were were bought out by Ottaway Newspapers did any US citizens lose their jobs. Maybe by printing inflammatory stories about our local police canadiens can keep keep thier jobs and The SAlem News/Ottaway Newspapers can sell more papers.
  • Harry · 1 year ago
Another moron. Ottaway does not own the Salem News and Ottaway is Dow Jones company -- a US company. On top fo that, your comments make no sense to rational people.

  • flagman · 1 year ago
HHebert, the reason you work the night shift is so you can get as many details as possible during the day.
This is proven by your "need" to be back in at 4, If you work 12-8 why do you "need" to be back at 4?

You want some cheese with that whine?
  • HHerbot · 1 year ago
Need to be back in at 4? becuase its a rotating schedule you dope. I have to work 2 midnights and then 2 4-12's. And that flagman is my straight shift. Cheese with that whine my ass. Why dont you do this this weekend (cause god knows youre lucky enough to work a M-F) On Friday night keep your ass up all night long. Drive around your town and right about 345 in the morning on Saturday when your body naturally starts to relax itself. pretend you get a call for a shooting or stabbing that puts your life and your families life in danger. Tell me how your body reacts. I'm sure you'll be wonderful at it. Then on top of that at around 8 am try and go home when its broad daylight outside and go get some sleep.
  • Sftgrl · 1 year ago
Quit your whining. Do you actually expect us to feel sorry for you? You CHOSE this profession.

And if you were commenting about me posting during work hours, well, buddy, I would LOVE to be working right now, but unfortunately, I'm one of the casualties of this horrible economy. The company I worked for went out of business, and I'm on the computer searching for new employment.

Are you feeling large now? No? Go put your gun on, then. Feel large now? Yeah, I thought so.
  • >>> · 1 year ago

  • flagman · 1 year ago
4 days on then how many days off?
I'm pretty sure they explained the rotating shift before you got the job so if you don't like it find a job you do.
    The world needs more bartenders.
  • HHerbot · 1 year ago
2 days off like every other human being. The purpose of the rotating schedule is so that once every 5 weeks we can actually live normal lives. You guys can continue with your perception of what we do. Don't worry I'm sure taking our guns away woult be the next thing in line that makes so much sense in this state. Thats ok, the next time I come to one of your houses I'll make sure to walk real slow, I might trip over the Obama/Biden sign
  • crazyasacoolfox · 1 year ago
HHerbot, sounds like a threat in his first post. Isn't there a law against that? lol Sad day for police:(
  • Insider · 1 year ago
If your worried about being ready for a shooting or stabbing don't work 40+ hours of overtime, then you will be able to stay up for your midnight shift and won't have to sleep in your cruiser during your shift!!! That way the city or town can get the 8 hours of work that your paid for!!!!
  • What Happened to America · 1 year ago
If you do not like your hours at your job, my suggestion is to get out of the field. Rotating shifts are not only associated with Police, but nurses, doctors, 911 operators, dispatchers and many other positions, so do not enter those fields, either. If you are really a family man that wants to be with his family, then please do so. The truth is that most police officers have the highest rate of alcoholism, extra marital affairs and drug abuse, than the citizens that they protect. This very well may be do to the hours and the pressures of the job, but many of us have stressful jobs and do not resort to those methods to deal with our stress. I agree that the real reason police officers are upset about this change is the mere fact that they will be forced to live on the salary of their job, alone and no longer attempt to gouge the system for an easy meal ticket. With the rotation of the shifts, you also enjoy many more long weekends then the people that work regular jobs, allowing you to do other vocations, like carpentry or security at business when you get your 5 days off.
  • crazyasacoolfox · 1 year ago
If police are so concerned about the safety of the public, why haven't they gone after school crossing guards job? i can recall (I'm showing my age) when police would provide crossing safety as a courtesy to the town where I lived. Not only was it a courtesy but it was a way for the police to get to know the kids and visa versa. We always looked forward to seeing the patrolman every morning and afternoon. They stopped this service as it was taking up to much of their valuable crime fighting resources. I think the real reason was the almighty dollar. They couldn't squeeze any money out of the school system for public safety so they left the schools to provide their own safety. I believe the real reason that officers are protesting here is only for the cushy overtime detail pay they get. BTW kudos to Salem News for taking this stance
  • HHerbot · 1 year ago
Mr. or Ms. Fox. In our town the school crossing is still done by the officers ON SHIFT when there is an absent crossing guard. The crossing guards voiced their concern over this thinking that the police would eventually take over the crossing duties thus eliminating their job. The message from town hall was very clear that the reason for creating the crossing guard position in the first place was to create jobs in town, specifically for stay at home moms/retirees to get a couple of extra dollars every week. Not saying thats the case everywhere but just my experience with it
  • HHerbot · 1 year ago
And in regards to there being a "threat" there is no threat. Look up Chapter 90 Section 7 of the Gen. Laws. The only law being broken is the fact that you have defective equipment if your light bulbs on your car are out.
  • flagman · 1 year ago
Isn't it nap time HHerbot? Give us a break with the next time I come to your house I'll walk slow, or I'll pull you over for a broken taillight crap. We have all heard it before and it just gives credence to the fact that most cops think they are above the law and are power hungry egomaniacs who are allowed to hide behind a badge and gun because they have a strong union who will back up everything and anything they do, even if it's wrong. Learn to live on your salary, OT and reduced details. Nighty night.
  • crazyasacoolfox · 1 year ago
Cool, I would just be careful how you word things on here. That statement sounds like you are going to use your constitutional power to retaliate against the public for losing your details. As an officer you must know that threats can be widely interpreted.
  • Light bulb out · 1 year ago
Yea I have seen so many cops at details stoping cars for any issues!! First get out of your car, then put down the coffee and donut and put down the phone!!!
  • crazyasacoolfox · 1 year ago
Thanks for clarifying that. Im sure is must be different from town to town.
  • Rat Roh · 1 year ago
Kudos to the Salem News for a change. There is no need for the police detail on streets that are not a major highway. All I see at these details are cops in their cars or hanging around smoking a butt and drinking coffee. Yah that's protecting the civilian population. OH PUHLEEZZZZ.... I've needed help to cross busy streets, but where was the cop? Yah you got it too busy drinking coffee and looking elsewhere.

I travel to other states and many a state do not use a police detail, but civilian flag people. Funny how that works for other states.
  • John · 1 year ago
If it was really about public safety like all the cops say, they would do it for the same pay the civilian flaggers are paid.

Some Police State! We can't strike, protest or engage in any organized labor action that inconveniences any of you. Just follow Gov all the way to the White House, because that is where he is headed and you will be left with a law enforcement profession that was emptied by his short sighted, short money saving plan. Next he will be after public pensions and medical coverage! I know lets take the whole thing private! That will solve everything!!
  • ritchie · 1 year ago
Jeese, and to think these cry baby cops are allowed to have guns.
First, not ALL details will be manned by civilian flaggers. the cops will still own over 70% of the action, don't act like ALL the cops lost ALL the details. This will be much less of an impact than they are claiming.
Second, on local town roads, it will be up to the town.
TODAY I saw TWO Danvers cops on a road detail for less than 2 hours, they were on Columbia Rd. (speed limit 20 mph), between 10am and noon. ONE civilian flagger could have EASILY controlled the VERY few cars wihich travel down that road in the late morning.
As for the threats I have been reading in this and other forums by alleged cops, you have NO RIGHT TO PRIVACY on this , or other sights when you make your pathetic threats.

Harry, your the moron. The Salem Evening News is owned by Community Newspaper Holdings out of Birmingham Alabama. This company also owns some Fox News affiliate stations. Now you know why they backed LT. Gov. Healy over Patrick. They also endorsed MCain over Obama. They are basically a southern Republican based newspaper and we all know the Republican party has a terrible record endorsing black candidates.
  • Angry_Danvers_Man · 1 year ago
Hey Will... Is it that they are just too liberal for this paper, or is it because they are black.. Get a grip you race whore. It has nothing to do with race, just that Barack and Coupe deVall are both sooooo far left, they are not endorsed for that reason and that reason only...

Don't agree with their similar politics, it must be race right?

I think we should think about having a nice monument for all the brave Policemen who have lost their lives in the line of duty while on traffic detail getting struck by cars .The drivers should have told the policeman to pay attention and not step backwards while he was either on his cellphone or yapping with the workcrew, I hope we always have the Salem News around, We would never be able to blog or have these things brought out. Who cares who owns it.?If it was locally owned you wouldn't know what goes on.

Are you talking about Ed Couture from MIddleton who was basically cut in half by a woman who had a seizure?
  • MT · 1 year ago
To rentacop. I think that the fact that police officers are protesting these details is a little embarassing for them, but to lump all police officers into this or those other things you mention is just crazy. In any profession there are going to be good and bad characters. This includes doctors, nurses, lawyers and any other profession. The 1 thing you're missing is that these players have been arrested and charged with the crimes you're talking about, sometimes by their own peers. If you think that all cops cover for each other that simply does not happen.

Yes, Weld did it to MASS HIGHWAY and it blew up in his face!!!! attempted to sell off and shut down many state highway properties laid off staff. The end result it cost the state more when they hired contractors and thats a fact!!!! Just look at the Danvers State Police Barracks, this used to be a Mass Highway office, Weld said he could get a very large amount of money at the time for the sale of the property ( I cant remember figure off hand ) and money would go back to state. What happened? any other state agency or city or town has right to get property before any attempts are made to sell it!. End result state police moved from peabody barracks to Mass Highways shut down building!!! Way to go weld and Privitization!!!!!!

Same thing in Arlington / Town got Mass Highway property

Is your head MT. Have you seen what happens to cops who commit crime. Other cops investigate and nothing happens. They should see the toughest punishments because they swore to uphold the law under oath. So they lied. Cops investigate cops that is corruption. I mean do we have gangbangers investigate gangbangers. NOPE. But cops do. The crime is they stick together because they all are corrupt.
  • ROB · 1 year ago
It would seem to me that both the state and the police have valid arguments, it just depends upon the place and time. I have gone by road work sites where there was clearly no need for a police officer to be working in the interest of public safety. There was little traffic and little potential for any problems. However, there are other times when a police officer is clearly needed, whether it is on a highway or busy street during heavy commute times. I think the crux of the matter is developing a fair system of how to choose which group is needed..
  • leegolfsa18 · 1 year ago
I thought their motto was "to protect and serve"? Whatever happened to that. Having cops on details is a waste of state funds. Police details do not "save lives" and the actions of those officers yesterday show that they put so many people in danger. Let's face it people...isn't always about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$4

Salemsucks please give me facts that nothing is done when cops investigate cops. Lt. Bettencourt was tried convicted sentenced lost his job and his pension. In my town a police officer caught stealing money about 2 years ago was charged by his own police department, convicted, sentenced, lost his job and his pension. Another police officer was fired for having a fake id in order to play in the over 30 softball. Another police officer in this same town was arrested for violating a restraining order was convicted and placed in jail. These are facts and i these things were all done by their own police department. I think you spend too much time believing what the tv shows portray as real life police stories. They are not factual.
  • salemsucks · 1 year ago
MT again you head is MT. Learn to spell. First I was only using a few examples of cops looking out for one another. If you want I can show you tons of stories of cops getting away with everything including murder. How bout the guy in NY that was leaving his Bachelor party had a wallet in his hand and cops shot him 51 times. Then it was investigated and it was a justified shooting. Or what about the cops caught on video beating people the proof is in the video but again cops investigate cops and again these cops were not charged. So get your head full because right now its MT.

Let me chime in here. I am well aware that in this economic downward spiral EVERYONE is feeling the cash crunch. For details to be the most commented on topic is not surprising. People need to do a little more research before attacking all details.
I agree that some cops, like every other professional group of people, have idiots who use their passion and enthusiasm in a counter-productive manner (see Woburn incident). I am aware that these people are the ones who get the media attention. I will be the first to say though that this is a small number of the police population. For most, paid details are a second job. Police salaries dont cover rising costs of living etc. that all of us are dealing with. Flagmen are only getting between $3-$8 more an hour than police. Police have also agreed to be paid the state wage in some cases. So for the same wage, do you want extra cops on the road or some civilian crossing guard? Questions about this wage rate, DO SOME RESEARCH!
It is also true about some not paying attention. Let me tell you though, the driver's inattention is what is dangerous. Instead of making blanket statements, take the civil service test in the Spring, make pennies for 6-7 months in the academy, and join a department.....unless you wont pass the backgound or are too fat to go over the wall, which is a possibility considering all the posts every day about details by the same people.
  • herbine · 1 year ago
    DO THE RESEARCH
Prevailing wage is $8- $10 less than most details.
All utility companies and towns don't pay prevailing wage, only state funded jobs, flagmen in these cases cost $15- $20 dollars an hour and there is no reason they shouldn't be used on roads with 40 MPH or less speed limits.
  • America; can't afford Obama · 1 year ago

I am ordinarily 100% pro-police. I'm a little torn on this issue. I understand why the police are upset. They could be losing a HUGE chunk of their income. Let's face it, that sucks. This is not a good time to take a reduction in pay. Honestly, though I don't think the police officers add anything to construction sites. I just went through a construction site this afternoon. The site was on the other side of the street. I had people flying over the double yellow lines and nearly taking me out. The officer was not directing traffic, he was talking on his cell phone and looking into the hole. I honestly can't remember the last time a detail officer made traffic around a construction site easier. If the officers want to continue getting this overtime pay, I say sure, as long as they are actually OUT OF THE CRUISERS (no matter the weather), directing traffic. No more sitting in the car/chatting on the cell phone/looking into the holes.. An honest day's work for a day's pay. That's all reasonable people want from the officers on detail.

I guess they must own Ch. 4, 5, 7, 25, and 56 too then, because they all did this story. Caught on camera is better than print, it shows just how bad they are.
I found the part when the cheif told his men, "they were the problem not the flaggers and to get out of there", most telling!
You could see what a public saftey issue the police really are.

you a##holes that are against cops, we all went into jobs knowing what it entails. they took these jobs knowing they will have details like standing around directing traffic and so on.
had i had the brains i would have become a cop.
none of this mattered before duval got into government, he has a best friend that wants to start a flagman business, if i want to start white slavery i wonder if i was his friend would he change the law
